  • Overview

    The Cloud Technical Residency (CTR) is a one-year rotational program in Google’s fastest growing business — Cloud.

    As a part of the Google Cloud Technical Residency Program, you’ll have the unique opportunity to work in different Google Cloud roles under the direct mentorship of experienced Cloud Googlers. The project rotations include opportunities to work with partners, engage in technical solution validation, develop scalable tools, demos and related assets, and provide implementation, advisory and support services to Google customers across a wide spectrum of industry and scale. Before you start project rotations you’ll undergo training to prepare you to add value on day one of your customer engagements.

    Training opportunities

    Our classroom-style training is designed to develop technical fundamentals, communication, and leadership skills. You’ll learn from some of the best in the business and participate in project-based learning with your cohort.

    Role rotations provide you with the on-the-job training where you’ll work on a range of projects, such as building tools to automate and scale business processes, coming up with different Google products to create custom solutions, and providing data driven insights to Google’s internal sales and product teams.

    The Cloud Technical Residency program gives you the unique opportunity to experience multiple different roles within our Cloud business. You’ll rotate through Cloud Customer Engineering, Cloud Professional Services, and Cloud Technical Support before being placed on a long-term team. You’ll graduate from the program with a well-rounded set of skills and experience that you can apply for the rest of your career.

    To apply, students must meet the following minimum qualifications:

    • BA/BS degree in Computer Science or related technical subject, or equivalent practical experience, with the ability to start full-time employment by July 2019.
    • Experience in web technologies such as CSS, HTML, HTTP, JavaScript/AJAX and XML.
    • Experience with developing programs/scripts in languages such as C++, Java, Python, Scala or SQL.
    • Evidence of customer service experience, demonstrated through coursework, internships, project work and/or other outside interests.

    Preferred qualifications:

    • Experience in systems software and algorithms, working with Linux/Unix and APIs.
    • Database design and SQL Query construction experience.
    • Ability to adapt your message to the technical level of the audience and comfortable presenting technical materials.
    • Excellent analytical, organizational, problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
    • Business acumen with strong customer service and communication skills.
    • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time.

    How do I apply?

    Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and can be submitted via the job description link. If selected for an interview, Cloud Technical Residency candidates will complete a series of video chat interviews.

    How is the program structured?

    Cloud Technical Residency is a full-time, one-year residency program designed to hone residents’ technical and business skills, provide experience on Google Cloud teams, and offer mentorship opportunities. Residents attend a short training period followed by rotations on three Google Cloud teams.

    What can I expect during the "training period" of the program?

    During the initial training period, Cloud Technical Residency combines interactive group learning with training on Google tools, technologies, client-facing skills, and best practices. Throughout the entire program, residents will continue training by working with mentors and on-the-job learning.

    What can I expect during the "rotational period" of the program?

    During the rotational period, residents are embedded on Cloud teams across three separate organizations: Cloud Customer Engineering, Cloud Professional Services, and Cloud Technical Support. They work side-by-side with Googlers on important, real-world projects that are core to Google.

    What happens at the end of the program?

    At the end of the Cloud Technical Residency program, residents are placed on a long-term team within Google Cloud (based on business needs and performance).
