Overview

Google's Hardware Product Sprint (HPS) will introduce you to the product development process for consumer electronics by challenging you to design and build your own product. Our program will cover:

  • Courses that identify some of the fundamentals of engineering that appear often in the consumer electronics space including microcontrollers, PCB design, assembly, and testing.
  • Materials, resources, and tools to design, ideate, and work together to build a prototype of consumer product.
  • A Google Hardware Engineer mentor who will serve as your product advisor over the course of the 12 weeks.
  • Opportunities to interact with Google Hardware engineers from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.
  • A group of 3-5 peers who you’ll collaborate with and bounce ideas off of in order to build out your individual products.
  • Exposure and insight into Google’s internship programs and technical career opportunities.

Eligibility

Students from all college institutions, and students who identify with a group that is historically underrepresented in the technology industry are encouraged to apply.

This application is intended for candidates that will be located in Taiwan during the program. If you do not meet this requirement, please consider applying for international opportunities on our careers site.

To apply, students must meet the following minimum qualifications at the start of the program:

  • For the 2021-2022 academic year, be enrolled as either a:
    • first year student in a Master’s degree program, or,
    • senior in a four year BA/BS program that intends to pursue a Master’s degree.
  • At least 20 years of age by the beginning of the program
  • Will participate in the virtual program from Taiwan.
  • Pursuing a technical degree in any of the following areas of study:
  • Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Product Design.

FAQs

What is the length of the program?

The program is a total of 12 weeks: Monday, June 28 - Friday, September 18, 2021. During this time, you will work virtually with the guidance of a Google Hardware Engineer who will serve as your Product Advisor.

What is the time commitment of the program?

Participants should plan to commit 8 hours a week to HPS during the 12 weeks of the program from June 28 to September 18.

When will I find out if I’ve been selected?

We will review all applications after the application closes on May 2, 2021. We’ll be reaching out to all students to notify them of our decision by the end of May 2021.

Do I need to be accepted or enrolled in a Master’s program to apply?

No. HPS is open to rising first year Master’s students and rising seniors in a four year BA/BS program that intend to pursue a Master’s degree. Rising seniors do not need to know their post-undergraduate plans to apply to HPS, but the program is designed for students who plan to continue their education after receiving their undergraduate degree.

What if I’m going into my fifth year of an undergraduate degree program or part of a co-op program?

If you’re a rising 5th year student or participating in a co-op program, you are still eligible to apply.

Do I need to submit an official transcript?

No, an unofficial transcript is all you need. Please make sure that we can easily read the transcript copy you submit. A PDF format is preferred.

I’ve already submitted my application but I’d like to update my resume and/or transcript. Am I able to do so?

You can update your resume and/or transcript by updating the original Drive link you shared or emailing tw-students@google.com. The deadline to update is May 2 at 11:59 p.m. PT. Once the application closes, we’ll be unable to update your documents.

Are students paid for their participation in HPS?

No, students are not paid for their participation in HPS.

Is the program all-expense paid?

Yes, for the design and creation of your product, Google will cover the cost of the materials you’ll need in order to get it started.
